Playing Sports in Kitsilano
Kitsilano is Vancouver's most active neighbourhood for outdoor recreation. The beachfront stretches from Vanier Park to Jericho, with volleyball nets, tennis courts, basketball hoops, and running paths all within walking distance. The culture here skews young and fitness-oriented — you will see people cycling, playing beach volleyball, or jogging the seawall at any time of day from April through October.
Transit access is solid. The #4 and #7 buses run along 4th Avenue from downtown to UBC, stopping within a few blocks of most facilities. Cycling is the local favourite — the Seaside Greenway bike path runs along the waterfront. Street parking is metered during the day and free after 10 PM. Summer weekends are the tightest for parking near Kits Beach, so transit or cycling is recommended.
Summer is peak season. Beach volleyball at Kitsilano Beach runs from June through September — arrive before 5 PM on weekdays or before 10 AM on weekends to claim a net. The outdoor tennis courts at Kits Beach and Jericho are free but first-come, first-served. In winter, the action moves indoors to Kitsilano Community Centre and nearby facilities. The community centre offers drop-in badminton, basketball, and volleyball throughout the rainy season.
Parking near Kits Beach can be challenging in summer. The lot at Cornwall and Yew fills up by noon on sunny weekends. Side street parking on residential blocks is available but may require a walk. The best strategy: bike in via the Seaside route, or take the #2 bus from Burrard Station.
